As Burglar was the winner of .the Amateur Cup Steeplechase at the Waimate Hunt Meeting last year, it may be of service to note the credentials of the half-dozen horses engaged in the same event at this year"s meeting on Saturday. '' ,"
Waikari, who heads the weights with 11.8, is a twelve-year-old gelding by Aulumnus from a mare by Good Bye (a son of Artillery), and he is owned by Mr. C. C. Douglas, of Waimate, who bought him from Captain N. A. Rattray. He was third in a couple of hunters' races last year, including the Waimate event.
Chicot is an aged gelding by Ace of Diamonds (son of Sarto) out of a Glenapp mare, and he is owned by Captain Rattray, of Waimate. Though weighted at 31.2 he has no known form. Lord Reading, one of the four on the bottom mark (11.0), has breeding that may count in his favour later on. He is a four-year-old chestnut son of Lord Warden and the All Red mare Belle of New York, dam also of Scamp, Thurnbell, and Rene Belle, and he is held on lease by Mr. C. L. and Miss S E. Orbell, of Timaru, from his breeder, Mr. G. A, Kain. It was Mr. C L. Orbell who held a partnership interest in Carinthia with his brother, Mr. W. H. Orbell. now one of the joint owners of Santoft. ■ ' Nightwind, also a four-year-old gelding, is another with good breeding, as he is by Night Raid (sire of Burglar) out of the Finland mare En Parole, dam also of Musical Moment (dam of Royal King, Maestro, etc.), Right and Left, Phoenix Park, and Great Charter. He is to be raced by Mr. H.-.V. Wareing, who usually has a jumper and who secured him recently from his breeder, Mr. H. El worthy. . The Tuarangi in the acceptance will have to have another name found for him, as this name is not available, tie is a six-year-old gelding by Balboa from a mare of unknown pedigree and he is owned by Mr. Anthony biworthy. Macailpein, the last name in the list, is a nine-year-old ■ gelding by Royal Mac (a son of Mountain King) from Fair Play, and he is owned by Mr;-'A. N. Grigg, of Surrey Hills, Ashburton.,
