EISTEDDFOD OPENS
MANY ENTRIES
TODAY'S CLASSES
The 3937 festival of the New Zealand Eisteddfod opened today and, judging by the number and quality of the entries, the festival should prove very successful. Sessions are being held daily at the Trades Hall and a highly interesting and varied programme has been drawn up. Tomorrow's sessions will be held at 9 a.m., 2 p.m., and 7.45 p.m. The results of the classes held up unttl N noon today are:— Recitation (boys 12 and under'l6), "Mrs. Willow" (John Drink water);— Keith Edwards, Brooklyn, 1; Robin Holloway, Hawera, 2; Roslyn Cox, Wellington, 3.
Recitation (girls 8 and under 12), "The Barrel Organ" (Alfred Noyes).— Gwenda Hayes, Lower Hutt, 1; Paddy Turner, Masterton, 2; Vernice Aston. Brooklyn, 3.
Recital in Character (not humorous) (girls 12-16), Own Selection.—Thea Smith, Lower Hutt, 1; Colleen Walling, <Kelburn, 2; Jean Russell; Melrose, 3.
Shakespearen Recitation, lady or gentleman; lady, "The, Dethroned Queen"; gentlemen, "Ulysses' Speech," —Miss Joy Knowles, Dunedin, 1; Miss Mary McGavin, Wellington, 2; Miss Dorothy Muir, Lower Hutt, 3. . 'Classes were held this afternoon.
