DR. P. R. McMAHON
DEGREE FOR WOOL
RESEARCH
Word was received last week by Mr. and Mis. J. McMahon, of Linton, that their son. Mr, P. R. McMahon, has been granted his Ph.D. after extensive work on wool research at the Leeds University.
Dr. McMahon has had a distinguished academic career. ...,i.. 0 ..\ uj was a student at Massey Agricultural College from 1931 to 1933, graduating B.Agr.Sc. in 1932 and M.Agr.Sc. in 1933. He specialised during the latter part of his course on wool research, with special reference to the prevalence of hairiness in wool, and the use of the benzol test, on which his thesis was written, and for which he brought out an improved testing instrument incorporating the use of the photo-electric cell for recording purposes.
In August, 1935. after winning the Macmillan Brown Scholarship, he went to Leeds University, from which lie has been granted his doctorate as a result of extended research into his specialised branch of the study of wool fibres.
A return of calls attended by the Wellington Fire Brigade last month, presented to today's meeting of thf Fire Board by the superintendent (Mr. C. A. Woolley), stated that the total of actual fires was 51 (property 22, chimneys Hi, gorsc, grass,' and rubbish 13). The false alarms totalled 23, of which six were justifiable and IV malicious.
