FEW OBJECTIONS

INCREASE IN SALARIES

BRITISH PARLIAMENTARIANS

(Received June 23, 1.30 p.m.)

LONDON, June 22,

Only a few voices were raised in opposition "to Mr. Neville - Chamberlain's motion that the salaries of members of the House of Commons be increased to £600 per year, which was carried by 325 votes to 17.

Mr. Chamberlain said he had been surprised and distressed to find that many members were living beyond their means and were obliged to curtail their children's education; some actually allowed themselves insufficient food.

"I do not want to fix a salary which would induce people to enter the House of Commons for the purpose of earning more than they could outside," he said. "On the contrary, I do not want to set the salary so low that men and women capable of rendering valuable service are prevented from entering the House of Commons. The extra cost will be £112,000 a year."
