ELEPHANT MAIL

Elephant mail was used to send a message more than 1000 miles across India —from Cooch Behar to Baroda. The message was from the Maharajah Bhup Bahadur, of Cooch Behar, to his Highness the.Gaekwar of Baroda. The Dowager Maharani of Cooch Behar is the daughter of the Gaekwar. The State elephant which bore the message was trudged from Cooch Behar to Calcutta—a distance of 300 miles. From Calcutta it took ship to Bombay and thence walked on to Baroda. The elephant, which is one of the Cooch Behar court tuskers, is called Jai Singh. As far as Calcutta it was accompanied by Protiva Dcvi, a female elephant. When the tusker went on board ship at Bombay, Protiva Dcvi walked back to Cooch Behar. '
