ORDEAL IN WELL

ATTEMPT TO SAVE OABY

(From "The Posts" Representative.)

SYDNEY, June 18,

Waist deep in water in the blackness of a disused well, a woman •at Cooktown (North Queensland) had a nightmare experience attempting to rescue her child.

The child, Robert Boyle, aged 18 months, playing in the backyard of his home, walked on the tin covering of a well. The covering broke, and he fell through to water 40 feet below. The mother, some time later, noticed the broken tin, and with the aid of a pipe running down into the well slid down 20 feet and dropped the remainder of the distance.

Although her hands, were severely burnt, she secured the unconscious child, and stood in inky blackness screaming to attract the attention of her neighbours. Eventually two men hauled the child to the surface in a bucket. The child was still alive, but died before reaching hospital.
