TRANSFORMER REPLACED
The transformer at the Melling substation that was struck by lightning yesterday was replaced at 4 p.m. and the station was functioning as usual eleven minutes later. This is the second time in two years that a transformer has been lost owing to damage by lightning and each time the cost is several thousand pounds. It is thought that the line which runs over the hills is struck and the electrical discharge carried to the transformer. Every care is taken to safeguard against danger to the line and transformer, but it is apparently impossible to completely safeguard them.
