TOO MUCH PROTECTION.
The Australian dairying . industry was described as "inefficient" and "uneconomic" by Professor S. M., Wadham, Prpfessor of Agriculture at the Melbourne University, at a conference of butter factory, managers arid- secretaries. The professor said that' as long as the dairying industry ■ was. one •. of the most protected industries in the Commonwealth those associated with it had little cause for congratulation. !.The criticism, in the minds of the people of Australia would -remain until the dairying industry could export on the world market ..-. at' world parity. That' should- be the, goal towards which the industry should press. "Today there are ominous signs . that the Ottawa Agreement will be amend-, ed, and that we are approaching a timo when our butter will meet more competition in the oversea market," Professor Wadham said. "We ought to ba doing everything in our power' to reduce dairying costs both in the.production and in the manufacture of .butterfat." ■ . -■••■.■... -; ''
