LIGHT READING
Amongst recent novels which may be recommended for light reading is "Cut Flowers," by Guy Fletcher. The heroine of this gay story was destined to be lucky, and she went through life as if it was natural for her to get all she wanted. Her daily round, as sales-girl in a smart and beautiful flower-shop, might seem to be heaven to many of her sex less fortunately placed than she. But there were several flies in the nectar, and Mr. Fletcher removes these portents of disaster with a deft touch, with a.result that is as happy for the reader as for Jennifer herself. "Green Hills Far Away," by S. C. H. Booth, is a novel of the countryside, dealing with a well-bred country girl who loved well but- not wisely and who fought for happiness and achieved contentment. A mistaken marriage, 7 with what came of it, is the theme of "Women Are Born to Listen," by Norah C. James. I In "The Wise Thrush" W. Cumming 'Tate tells the story of a broken marriage, but the hero is possessed of an unbroken spirit which wins through in trie end after a bitter struggle. "New Wine at Cock-crow," by G. U. Ellis, opens with a picture of upper middle-class England, ruled by a mili-tary-financial coterie, who are busy reestablishing the conventions and social taboos that the war had shaken without shattering. Into this small circle of elderly and people are introduced the principal charactersCaptain Burney, a retired sea captain; his elder daughter, by a divorced society woman; his younger, by a second wife; Major Scone (retired Indian Army), an amusing, gambling ne'er-do-well; and his only son Kirn. It continues with Kirn's love for the two half-sisters and the final happy solul tion.
