FULL OF INCIDENT

BRIGHT LEAGUE GAME

COOTES' LAST.MINUTE

EFFORT

The St. George-Central game last * Saturday was one of the finest expositions of club Rugby League evsr seen in Wellington. St. George won by 28 points to 23, but at no stage were Central really subdued. In ' the' last quarter thei? forwards almost1 succeeded in pulling the game'out of the fire. It was at this stage that J. Cootes demonstrated what a great forward ha really is by scoring three tries.

J. Carroll, the St. George hooker, gave the St. Georgo. backs almost-a monopoly of the ball from the set scrums, and they roads full use of their opportunities. The Red backs often, cleverly reversed movements and threw the opposition out of gear.

Fifty-one points were scored in SO minutes, which demonstrated the fast pace throughout, and the fact that the game was crammed with incident.

A. Broadhead showed rare guile at the back of the scrum, but G. O'Hal* loran was badly beaten for the ball by his rival hooker, J. Carrol. He, however, played a fine game.

L. Coombes made some splendid openings, but more often than not wax caught with the ball. ;

L. Simons has played some goo* games in the second row for St. George; still one would like to see a bit more pep in his dashes.

The experiment of shifting T. Cook from five-eighth to the right wing has proved a profitable, one for St, George. Cook scored a try last Saturday after a run of 75 yards. He is very speedy, and his all-round play points to him reaching better company.

A. O'Connor's style of play is admirably .suited to Rugby. League, as the game favours amoving half and varis tion at the scrummage base.

T. Jones, ex-member of to* CUy Club, North Auckland, has joine* Randwick,. and will greatly strengthen that team's forwards. . . ..

The St. George' reserve grade, team has made solid improvement, and last week defeated Eastern Suburbs, 16-0. Randwick remain unbeaten, but wera somewhat lucky to defeat Petone, 4-X
