; Tne-following were present at" the monthly meeting of the executive council of the New Zealand Institute of. Horticulture, which was held at Wellington recently:—Messrs. F. S. Pope (president), Campbell, Waugh, MacKenzie, Mason; Poole, Hyde,, and G. S.r. Nicoll (Dominion secretary). Apologies were received from Dr. Oliver, ; Messrs. Brash, McMillan, and Dallas. Condolence was directed to be conveyed to the relatives of Mr. E. Phillips Turner, a member of the executive council, who had always been keenly interested in the institute's activities and of invaluable assistance in forestry matters. Congratulations were directed to be conveyed to Sir Algernon Thomas, K.C.M.G., Auckland, an- honorary fellow of the institute, on his well-deserved knighthood. Appreciation was expressed, of the inauguration by the Otago District Council of lectures in horticultural science. On the recommendation of the examining board, the Cockayne gold medal was awarded to Mr.. R. W. Balch, of Christchurch, as the best'diploma candidate at the 1936 examination. Following on a conference remit,- an increase of capitation from 20 to 30 per cent, was ap* proved.
