The New Zealand Wool Publicity, meeting in Wellington yesterday afternoon, appointed Mr. F. S. Arthur, of Dunedin, as New Zealand representative on the International Wool Publicity and Research Secretariat in London. The appointment was announced last night by the chairman of the committee (Mr. H. M. Christie. M.P.). Mr. Arthur is at present manager of the wool, skins, and produce export,department of Dalgety and Co., Ltd., at Dunedin. He will take up Ms new duties as soon as possible.
Mr. Arthur, who Is 36 years of age, was educated at the Otago Boys' High School, which he attended from 1915 to 1918 inclusive, and at Otago University, where he was a student from 1919 to .1922. Passing his examinations in accountancy, Mr. Arthur was admitted as a member of the New Zealand Society of Accountants in 1922. He joined the firm of Dalgety and Co., Ltd., at Dunedin in 1918, and has been employed by that firm ever since.
A sound business training and a wide knowledge of the textile trade is possessed by Mr. Arthur. From 1921 to 1923 he attended wool instruction classes at the Dunedin Technical College, as well.as taking private instruction in wool classing. He has made a special study of wool from the selling and valuing side, as well as from that of breeding and manufacture. He has won the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society's Cup for most points in open competition for wool judging. Mr. Arthur's early years in Dalgety and Co. were spent in various departments, including the merchandise, grain and seeds, and accountancy departments. In 1922 he joined the firm's wool department, at that time in charge of Mr. George Black, now New Zealand superintendent for Dalgety and Co. He assumed control of the wool, skins, and produce export department in 1924, and has successfully managed and extended that department ever since. In 1926 and 1927 he acted as wool auctioneer. Mr. Arthur's duties have, brought him into close contact with buyers representing all countries, and he is thoroughly acquainted with the requirements of the trade.
Mr. Arthur was a Dunedin delegate to the conference in Wellington on the wool-scouring subsidy scheme. He is on the committee of the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society. He is a director of the firm of J. J. Arthur. Ltd., retail clothiers, Dunedin.
