RONGOTAI HANGAR

PRACTICALLY COMPLETED

The main construction work at the new hangar at Rongotai is practically completed, and the finishing work will be done with a good margin of time before the commencement of the ser-. vice. ,

, The concrete floor has still to. be

finished, and some further work is to be done about the apron .at the front of the hangar, but the main work to be done is the placing of glazing, of which there is a great total area to ensure maximum lighting, particularly in the workshops at the back of the hangar. For a time the City Engineer's department was inclined to the manufacture Of the doors to close ths main opening locally, but decided eventually to import them from a Canadian factory specialises in this work. The doors came to hand recently, and are considered to be a (thoroughly good job and a good buy. Their measurements were so true that they went up into position without: the slightest difficulty, and the whole job was finished iri half a day.

The hangar will be used for club and visiting machines as well as for Union Airways planes, so that, big as it is, there will be no great margin of floor space. Palmerston North will remain the main control of Union Airways activity, and the spare machines will presumably normally remain at the Milson Aerodrome, though what developments are ahead and what further extensions of service will be made remain to be seen. A good deal will depend upon what Wellington does about Rongotai Aerodrome, for as it is it is not an airport of which this city can be proud." It only just does for today, and that will not be good enough for the greater requirements of expanding air traffic. •
