A MAORI MEMORIAL

(Special to the "Evening Post.") WANGAI^UI, June 2.

In memory' of the late Mr. Rua Whakarua, chairman of the Tarariaki Native Land Board, a small brick chapel is to be erected near his grave at Nukumaru by his widow and family. The Rev. A. H.Norrie, of Westmere, and Chaplain Fraser have been entrusted with the task of seeing that the chapel is erected.

A colourful, ancient ceremony was carried out on a recent evening 'by elders of the Ngaraura tribe at the Ihupuku Hall, Waitotara, It was the old ceremony of pou-tu (the < observe ance,.of midwinter). From dusk till dawn they watched the heavens,,as in the olden days, and related the lessons they had ;learned from Nature.
