WAIKATO MEETING

FOUR GISBORNE SUCCESSES

(By Tetsgriph.) (Special to the "Evening Post.") HAMILTON. Mf.y 24. Form failed to work out with precision on the final day of the Waikato Racing Club's Winter Meeting at Te Rapa today, for every favourite was beaten and four of the winners, Bass, Small Boy, Collision, and De Friend, paid double figures on the win machine. An outstanding feature was the success of the Gisborne horses, Small Boy, De Friend, Collision, and Hunting Star. Small Boy and De Friend are trained by I. T. Tinsley, and the other pair by W. Goscomb. The weather was fine, the attendance large, and the track holding after overnight rain. Totalisator investments for the day were £29,429, compared with £19,918 10s last year, an increase of £9510 10s. For the meeting the total was £65,702, an increase of £19,373 10s. SCOTLAND'S HALF-BROTHER. Bass reached the front very quickly in the Gordonton Stakes, and Dv Maurier put in a sharp burst to join him at the end of a couple of furlongs. The pair raced together well clear of the field to the furlong post, where Dv Maurier began to weaken and enabled Bass to score his first win at double figures, and very easily too. Bass is a half-brother by Litlle England to the well-performed Scotland and he too can handle bad ground. Dv Maurier is a very promising maiden and should be a good hack next season. Huntsman's Chorus, who finished a moderate third, was just in front of Maori Song, Very Glad, Melvanui, Requiem, and Te Maranui. APPRENTICES IN SADDLE. The apprentices had their chance in the Hangatiki Hack Handicap, and two of them staged a rare finish, Small Boy just shading Gay Rebel. The latter did not begin very well but he had improved his position and both he and Small Boy had to go out a- bit crossing the top. Besiege also had to cover extra ground and he went out very wide making the home turn, but for which he might have bothered the pair in front of him. Philemup, always prominent, was a good fourth, and Seaman, Ringshot, Royal Mistake, and Gay Sister were not far away, the last-named taking up the unusual role of pacemaker. A STERLING PERFORMANCE. The Coronation Hurdles was a very fine race, for most of the thirteen runners had a chance making the home turn, Prince of Orange at that stage being the most unlikely winner. Collision had just reached the front, and, finishing in dashing style, he won very decisively from Pango, with High Quality just cutting Huskie out of third money. The winner registered a sterling performance, for he had only one horse behind him a mile from home. He is not engaged in the Great Northern Hurdles, but on today's race he might have' been allowed to take his chance. Pango ran one of his best races, but he too is not in next week's big race. High Quality stayed on well, and Huskie, a Great Northern candidate, gained friends, for he did not receive the best of runs and in addition should be all the better for the race. Tout le Monde weakened in the final quarter, as did also Clarion Call, Erination, Brigadore, and Killadar. As a Great Northern Hurdles trial the result was rather disappointing, Huskie being the only candidate to impress. GAY ROSE'S DOUBLE. Gay Rose again won the big flat race, the Te Rapa Handicap, and she had to be good te do so, for she was not closer than twelfth, at the home turn. Then she had to go round the field and was very wide out .on straightening up.- Even at the half-distance the leader, Te Hai, was clear of the bunch, but, continuing har Irresistible run, Gay Rose caught To Kai near the post and won going away. It was a .sterling performance, and although this winner was second favourite her backers secured a win dividend well on the way to double figures. Gay Rose is in the Cornwall Handicap on Saturday week with the minimum weight, but she will probably be raised considerably, for she won today under 8.5. Te Hai was better served by the shorter distance and was always prominent, and so too was Tradesman, who will be hard to beat in his Ellerslie engagements if he strikes a really heavy winter track. Scotland was right up fourth, shaping promisingly for 'his Cornwall Handicap engagement. Armacourt was closest of the rest at the finish, with Day Wind, who was one of the pacemakers, next. Boomerang, was better, placed in the running than on the opening day and fifth at the home turn, but he failed to run on, finishing seventh. Royal Dance was a trifle slow away and was unable to get near the leaders. ALLEGRETTO FIRST UP. •Windsor Lad, a warm favourite for the Waikato Steeplechase, appeared to have the race in safe keeping, for he was well clear of Valpeen and Allegretto, four.fences from home when he fell. Previous to this, however, he had chanced a couple of his fences. The elimination of the favourite left Valpeen well clear of Allegretto, with the bunch some lengths back. Allegretto made an effort as the field went for the thifd to last fence and he jumped into the lead here. Although he landed uncertainly at the final obstacle and was challenged by Valpeen, he. carried too many guns and scored nicely. As this was his first race for nearly twelve months, he must now enter calculations for the Great Northern Steeplechase. He did not look thoroughly tuned up and so he may be all the better for this effort, although it usually takes a thoroughly seasoned horse to win a Great Northern Steeplechase. Valpeen displayed rare dash throughout and he made the pace for most of the way. He now comes down six pounds in the big Ellerslie cross-country race, and,' ridden more quietly, he is not without an excellent chance. Monastic finished well from a good way back, and. so did Pahu. B^th have real stayers' chances in th/ CJreat Northern. Royal Limond wen. a fair race. Forest Glow and Sky Pilot fell at the double with half the journey covered, and Lucidus lost his rider at the penultimate fence when in third place. En Tour pulled up very lame. DE FRIEND'S GOOD WIN. One of the last to leave the mark, De Friend put in-a fine finishing effort to catch Johnny Walls near the post in trie Maeroa Handicap. It was a very fine effort, for the winner had to' go round the field on the turn. Johnny Walls and Whirling set, a hectic pace, and they were five lengths clear of the bunch half a mile from home. While Johnny Walls was able to go on with only a light weight, the pressure told on Whirling, who weakened into third place. Adalene came home fairly well for fourth, the best of the others being Sweet Rose, Winlona, Toslv and Crooning. Greek Gold got into the ruck early and was always making heavy weather of it. De Friend may be capable of winning again if produced at Ellerslie, for there was real merit in today's victory. MARKED IMPROVEMENT. Hunting Star, displaying marked improvement on his first day's running, led -practically throughout to win the Farewell Hack Handicap at nice odds. He had to be shaken up when Sunny Downs came at him near the post, but the Gisborne gelding won well, although Sunny Downs, in a bad position during the early running, might have been considered unlucky. Gay Streak, a moderate third, again gave a nice place return. Poker Face, always handy, was up fourth. Black Musk did best of the others, and he may be seen to greater advantage at Ellerslie. Kena and Jewelled Girdle were never prominent. RESULTS IN DETAIL. Results were:— Gordonton Stakes, £200; 6 furlongs. —6-7 Bass, 8.5 (L.
