FIRE ON STEAMER

A GOOD SAVE

The Holm Shipping Company's coastal steamer John, which is being dismantled at Clyde Quay Wharf, was the ,scene of a small outbreak of fire last evening, when a quantity of dunnage stowed in the ship's bottom caught alight. Smoke pouring from her funnel attracted the attention of a passer-by who knew that it could not be because of the vessel's getting up steam. The Central Fire Brigade quickly turned out, and -was on the scene at about 7.30 p.m. The fire was extinguished by a small hose and bucket pumps. It is believed to have been caused by hot metal dropping as a result of oxy-acetylene apparatus being used yesterday to dismantle the deck-house. Little damage was done, except to the material which caught fire.
