PHARAOH'S SUCCESS

VERY DISAPPOINTING ODDS

(From "Vedette.") SYDNEY, May 14. The Chief Ruler—Lady Pym gelding Pharaoh won his first race at RandArick on Coronation Day, but at a price that was disappointing •to his jonnections. J. T. Jamieson ,has been patient with the lop-eared chestnut, who had ■ been mildly supported on several occasions, on each of which le had been running on. On Wednesday, when the jockeys' lames.were nardly semaphored and ong before the barrier positions were loisted, Pharaoh was rushed in the jetting ring. The opening price was lot exactly liberal and it was soon nost niggardly. As events turned out t was a winning price, for Pharaoh, ifter being second. last • away, went , •ight through on the rails. Towards he finish he had Dark Stain in front li him, but they shifted out and A. Xnox drove him through. Once clear 3haraoh drew right away in a fashion ;hat suggested he is a likely stayer vhen he reaches more mature age. Jamieson also provided the third Dlace-filler, Latharna, in the Coronation ?up. Latharna raced patchily and with nore determination might have nnish:d second, but he would not have won. CURATOR'S TWO WINS. , The Cup was won by Curator, who scored last Saturday in the James 3arnes Plate. Curator met all his anagonists on much worse terms in_ the :up and silenced a good deal of lrreiponsible talk.. It was whispered on ill sides that all was not right with i he Plate, but Curator won even more ;asily and the opposition shaped no setter. ■ ■ . ' • Curator is trained by A. G. Papsvorth, who burst from comparative Dbscurity to the lull glare m of the limelight through the aid of Talking in the spring. Curator has always been i good galloper, and Papworth has.mv proved him so much thai now he might pc a first-class handicap horse. Curator was bidden on eaclr occa;ion by M. Papworth, son of the ■ irainer, and a promising apprentice. He handled ;the horse like; a veteran ■, n each of his Randwick races. THE RAIDER'S FAILURES. The Night Raid gelding The Raider was a costly failure on each day at Randwick. At Tattersall's Meeting on Saturday, he had the race apparently won and'then permitted Babm to de!eat him. On Coronation Day m a ;imilar-class field he did not go. quite jo far, for he dropped out at seven iurlongs and missed a place. While ie is not entirely reliable it is probible that he would do better at seven 'urlongs than at ra mile. - ■ . The Limond—Aspic three-year-old Sdible had two runs at Randwick but •an indifferently on each occasion., Sdible has been a disappointing animal . so far and his trainer, T. Williams, will lave some difficulty in placing him. Two Queensland horses were promiaent in the betting at Randwick on Coronation Day, Soft Step and hastate, out only Hastate justified the generous support. Soft Step actually started iavourite for the Cup for some peculiar reason,' for he has, been backed and jeaten on innumerable occasions and :ias not run a.decent race, .Hastate an the contrary won a mile welter in test-class style. His trainer, F. f McGrath, prepares him for a Mr. w. ; \. Collins, who is some 1500 miles »way in Cairns. McGrath will be able :o take a satisfactory balance-sheet to :he north when he goes away for his jnnual holiday.' ■ -- ;,■■■..:.-
