AUSTRALIAN LAMB

EXPORT AND LOCAL TRADE

Reference is made in the annual wool review of Winchcombe, Carson, Ltd., Sydney, to Australia's expanding lamb trade, not only with Great Britain but in the Commonwealth itself. It is noted that in 1936 lamb shipments to that market were 4,566,000 carcasses, or 1,469,775 more than for 1932, the year of the Ottawa Agreement. It is regretted that other outlets for lamb are not developing. Exports in 1936 to markets other than the United Kingdom were only 45,437 carcasses.

Great Britain's population is not increasing to any degree. The Dominions now enjoy the greater part of England's lamb trade.. In the first eleven months of 1936 her imports were 3.521,401cwt from Australia and New Zealand, and 965,074cwt from South America . and other foreign sources. The outlook for lamb in the British Isles continues favourable, and producers are likely to find a ready out T let for supples in that quarter: over the next three years arrangements provide for the importation by the United Kingdom of reduced quantities of foreign-grown lamb and mutton. That arrangement enhances Australia's prospects of further developing her lamb industry.

It is noted that "the public in Australia have developed a taste for lamb, while mutton consumption is falling off."
