A CENSUS OF CHAMOIS
A census of chamois is being carried out in the Tatra mountains in Slovakia. This difficult task is being undertaken by some forty, groups of four men each. Every morning they climb up the mountains to a height of 7000 ft and wait there, until twilight, when the chamois leave their favourite shelter among the dwarf pine trees.' Each group of men : visits the region allotted to it on three successive, days. The total number of chamois sighted during this period is divided by three and the resulting figure taken as a fair average on which definite figures can be based. It is estimated that there are from 1200 to 1300 chamois living now in the Tatra mountains and about 1700 in the whole of eastern Czechoslovakia.
