Martara's former owner, Mr. C. W. Boyd, did not have to wait long for his first- return with his recent purchase, Tidewaiter, whom he bought privately in Auckland at Easter after he had been passed in at auction for 50 guineas. Tidewaiter had his first r?ce in his new colours at Woodville, when he was neither backed nor sighted, but yesterday he was a hot. favourite, and he duly obliged ■ after a hard final tussle with Galteemore. Tidewaiter was four or five places back in the early running, but as Galteemore was assuming charge from Royal Portrait-nearing the straight he moved up behind the pair, and, coming along the 6uter with his challenge, he steadily wore down the Trentham representative and beat him home by a neck, i • ■ ' Tidewaiter is a three-year-old brown gelding by Tidal from the Englishbred Sonning mare Ballymoy 11, who was raced with success in«the Dominion by the Hon. E. R. Davis and Mr. 0.-Nicholson, and he is the first living offspring of his dam. After showing early promise in his breeders' jacket, he disappointed later when backed heavily and he was sent up for sale at Easter. He is a compact gelding who may develop into a useful performer now he has started winning. Galteemore, running his best race yet, was beaten only over the last portion by a horse who may turn out better than average. Royal Portrait was disappointing, as he was failing at the straight and finished only a poor third. Ruling Spi showed , pace early. Colin and Bit o' Blue, from the Nelson-Marlborough circuit, were outclassed.. ,
