HUTT VALLEY CELEBRATIONS

Lower Hutt and Petone streets were gay last night with coloured lights and buntihg, all the public buildings and business places being decorated. Favourable comments were made on ■the decorations at the Riddiford Baths, Lower Hutt, and the Town Hall buildings in Petone and Lower Hutt.

,Over 3000 persons were present at the fireworks display on the Lower Hutt Recreation Ground,.and judging by the applause and frequent calls' of appreciation the display was highly satisfactory. To prevent accidents several acres .of the ground were roped off, but even then the police officers ' had some difficulty in preventing encroachment's on the display area.

There were a number of set pieces and numerous cascades, geysers, Catherine wheels, shooting stars, as well as sky-rockets and other items. The display lasted an hour. At 8 o'clock huge bonfires were lighted on the surrounding hills by Boy Scouts. The fireworks display brought such an influx of spectators from outside districts that a traffic jam was caused by the parking of cars in Woburn Road. On account of the special occasion leniency was displayed by the authorities and traffic was diverted to other streets.

Collections were taken up during the day for the King George V Memorial Fund. The total amount collected is not yet available, but the amount taken at the civic service in the morning amounted to £26 18s 6d.
