NATIVE GAME
DESTRUCTION OF PESTS
The increase in number in some districts of the shag, hawk, stoat, and weasel has led the Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. W. E. Parry) to ask acclimatisation and kindred societies and citizens to strengthen their efforts to destroy those birds and animals which are a menace to the trout and native birds of the Dominion.
The Minister said today that earlier in the year he had directed the officers of the Department of Internal Affairs, which controlled - the acclimatisation district of Rotorua and Taupo, to make more intense than in -the past their campaign of destruction of the shag, hawk, and stoat particularly, and a noticeable effect had been obtained.
"A report received, this week on the shag,"- stated Mr. Parry, "shows that in the last financial year just closed the one shilling bonus has been paid on 407 shags. In addition, the rangers of the Department have destroyed 222 of the birds, as well as shooting out 20' nests and smashing 57 eggs."
