FELL IN LOVE
SEAMAN DESERTS SHIP

AUCKLAND, May 12.
Another of the seamen who deserted from the Sydney Star, John Quinn, aged 23,' pleaded guilty before Mr. >y. R. McKean, S.M., this morning.
The police said that Quinn left the ship af Auckland on April. 1,, a, warrant for his arrest being issued" at Lyttelton. Quinn had since been working on a trawler at Auckland. ' Counsel for the defence, Mr. Aekins. said that Quinn had.signed on at London and left the ship at Auckland be^ cause' he had fallen in love with a New Zealand girl and wanted to marry her. He was of good character; and. had left £20 in wages on the ship.
A representative of the shipping company told the Magistrate , that Quinn was not wanted back on the vessel, which had since arrived at London. There was too much desertion by seamen. ■■■'■ 7 f
Stating that he could not treat Quinn differently from his companions, the' Magistrate sentenced him to seven days' imprisonment.'He said that the ■wages' -left on the! ship would be forfeited.'' '''.-'
