"PUREST KNIGHT'S" COFFIN
The discoveryof a ycbffin believed to hold the body of the Chevalier Pierre Bayard, France's "most pure knight" and hero of sixteenth century wars, is announced by the French Ministry of Education. The famous knight, "Sans Peur et Sans Reproche" (fearless, and faultless), died in 1524. The coffin had been the object of. a search for more than one hundred years. In a'will dated 1616, Claude da Bourchenu, heir to an. uncle of the knight, Laurent, Bishop -of Grenoble, directed that he be buried in Encrypt of an old convent with the body of the knight and two other' members of the family. Armed with ,this will, the historian obtained th? Ministry of Education's authorisation to dig on the indicated site. After ten days' work four coffins were found. One was believed to contain the knight's body. All four were sealed pending, examination by experts.
