A pleasant function took place at the Oddfellows' Hall, Porirua, last week, when the chairman and councillors of the Makara County Council -were the guests of, the local branch of the R.S.A. at a social evening. An illuminated address was presented to the council on: behalf of the Returned Soldiers' Association as a token of appreciation of the many kindnesses and the assistance given .during the twentyone years of the. association's existence, Mr. Barclay, the. president, in making the presentation, stressed-the great.part that all local bodies and the general public had played during the war years and-also during the period of.depression. He also paid tribute to the foresight of those who had controlled the many funds collected during the war. . Mr. Mexted, chairman of the council, expressed the thanks of himself and fellow-councillbrs -as well as the citizens of the .district for the gift, assuring those, present. that the address would occupy a,place of honour in the Council Chambers, as a lasting reminder of the "great debt that they as well as all New Zealand owed-to those who took their part in the defence of the Empire during the war years of 1914-1918.. - Mr. E.
