SILVER JUBILEE PROFITS

The Silver Jubilee train, which daily makes the run between London and Newcastle-upon-Tyne in four hours, covered 133,464 miles last year. The receipts averaged 13s lid per mile, and- operating expenses were only 2s 6d per mile. These figures, said Sir Nigel Gresley, chief mechanical engineer of the L.N.E.R., excluded profits on diningcar services, which were approximately equal to interest on the capital cost of the engine and train. A supplementary charge of 5s for, first class and 3s for third class is made to all passengers, and the receipts from this source amounted to £12,000, which was ' roughly 34 per cent, of the first cost of the train.
