EXPORT EMBARGO

BUTTER-BOX TIMBER

AUSTRALIA LOOKING ROUND

(From "The Post's" Representative.)

SYDNEY, April 24,

The industry of making butter-boxes in New South Wales has been seriously affected by; the New Zealand Government's embargo on the export of 30 000,000 feet of New Zealand white pine. The butter and cheese factories conference in Sydney decided to ask the Federal Minister of Commerce to negotiate with the New Zealand Government on the matter. There is an acute shortage or suitable timber for box-making, and the inevitable result will be added costs to the dairying industry. Factory representatives declared at the conference that the New Zealand" Government, in prohibiting the export after contracts had been signed, had committed an illegal act. One contract was for 20,000,000 feet, with the option of a similar quantity, and another was for 10 000,000 feet. About 4,000,000 feet had been supplied when the New Zealand Government stopped further exP°T'he New South Wales factories would have been safe for 10 years if the New Zealand Government had not interfered," said Mr. J. J. Hayter, chairman of the Norco Company.

Negotiations are now in progress with Umber merchants in Borneo, who state that they are able to supply annually 4,000,000 feet of timber suitable for box-making. Tests are also being made with wood from other countries. ,
