PARENTS' ASSOCIATION

EVENING

The Parents' Association of the Hutt Valley High School began their winter social activities with a dance and social evening, held in the school gymnasium., Dr. A. G. Butchers, president of the association, extended a welcome to those who attended, and Mr. J. N. Millard (headmaster) introduced members of the teaching staff to the parents. Mr. R. Cowie as M.C. conducted community singing, and organised amusing novelty dances and games. Mr. J. Mann was accompanist.

Old pupils of the Hutt Valley Memorial Technical College held a first dance in their new assembly hall, situated in Kensington Avenue. Petone. Mr. A. Reid, president of the Old Pupils' Association, was present at tne dance, and the committee comprised Misses Francis Townsend (wearing green floral ninon), Monica Edwards (floral georgette), Ngaire Fisher (blue ripple crepe), Sadie Marsh (white marocain), Zane Wilton (blue £oral, voile), Audrey Robins (vieux rose crepe), Joan Walker (sapphire georgette), Edna Englert (rose maro-. Cain), Rae Home (blue floral organdie), and Messrs. J. Dempsey, T. Walker ,and J. Taplin. Mr. K. Salt was M.C, and Mr. Ryder provided the music. An exhibition of ballroom dancing was given by pupils of Miss Draper, Miss Winsome, and Master Mervyn Smith. . Mr. McFadyen (headmaster of the college) and Mrs. McFadyen attended the dance, and members of the teaching staff, the Misses Miller, Anderson, Burnett, Messrs, Ritchie, Miller, and Green. The guests included Mr. and Mrs. Williamson, Mr. and Mrs. Townsend, and Miss M. Scoringe (Morven). Old pupils present were the Misses J. Power, G. and A. Walker, V. Clemmens, A. Thompson, J. Another of the popular dances organised by the social committee of the Hutt Railway Workshops was held in the large social hall of the workshops. The dances, which take place weekly, are well supported. Charities benefit from the proceeds, which also support the annual party given for the children of the employees. The committee comprised Messrs. F. C. E. Parr (secretary), H. Facey, I. Thompson, F. Bonifant, H. Chappell, W. Smith, T. Pincock, F. Topham, A. Stratford, N. Cowan, and F. Eastham. Mr. Smith was M.C. Forsy the's orchestra supplied excellent'music. Rowing: Club Dance. The Petone Rowing Club marked the close of their season with a final dance in their pavilion on the Esplanade, Petone. Though the club's social functions have received excellent support during the season, there was a record attendance upon the final night, and the capacity of the dance-room was fully taxed. The Wellington Ladies' orchestra supplied the music. Committee members present were Mesdames A. E. Jones (wearing green satin), T. Watson (black taffetas), W. The boys and friends of "C" Company, Hutt Valley territorial unit, had a very enjoyable evening on Saturday at the residence of Corporal and Mrs A. McGechan, Woodvale Avenue, Lower Hutt, this being the first of a series of these gatherings for the winter months. The path through the bush to the house was brightly indicated with coloured lamps and Chinese lanterns, the house also being. gaily decorated. The evening was spent in a very social atmosphere of games and competitions. Among those present were Mesdames A. Taylor, E. Brown, L. Brodie, Misses J. Gardner, P. Kerr, M. Adams, E. Mackie, E. An interesting and instructive evening was held recently at the Radiant Health and Psychology Club.' when Miss Edith Hind, M.A., A.T.C.L., spoke on the universal appeal of. Shakespeare. Miss Hind gave a brief outline of Shakespeare's life and work, and spoke of his wonderful delineation of human character. During the course of her lecture Miss Hind gave excellent readings from several Shakespearian plays.
