LUCKY JACK POPULAR
OAMARU TROTS
(Special from "Irvington.")
CHRISTCHURCH, May 3.
Lucky Jack has given the impression that he will be in New Zealand Cup class before the end of this season, and he will receive an opportunity to go a j step nearer that company at Oamaru this week, when he will meet nothing o' an outstanding nature in the small field comprising the principal event, the President's Handicap. _ J The Wyndham Cup winner, Belle Gratfan, will compete at the Oamaru Trotthif Club's Meeting on Saturday, and she will then enter a Canterbury stable, having been sold at a price reported to be a record for a Southland mare. Like other Southland performers to come to Canterbury, Belle Grattan has compiled a good record m her own district, and she is now on a good mark for local racing. While little has been seen of him at headquarters, New Derby is being kept in work, and he appears to be mucn sounder than was the case a few weeks ago. He has done well, and promises to be in good order when suitable classes are presented. The latest Southland contribution to Canterbury racing is Eddie Tolan, who has entered M. C. McTigue's stable at Methven, and is repox-ted to have been sold to a Christchurch sportsman. Eddie Tolan has some good performances to his credit. , . The manner in which Gaillard has recovered from the lameness which always affects him after hard racing or work has been most noticeable in the past, but he did not make his usual recovery after the recent Ashburton Meeting, and a. the moment he is on the easy list undergoing treatment. EDWAEDS'S TEAM. With War Buoy, Frisco Lady, Frisco Boy, Gamble, and Nobleman all spelling, M. B. Edwards has not a very big team in work at Yaldhurst. It is possible that War Buoy will resume work at an early date to be prepared for winter racing, as his best performances for some time have been registered _m heavy going, but it is unlikely that the others mentioned will be seen out in the near future. ... The three-year-old Becky Direct has resumed work after a lengthy spell, during which she has built up and done well. This filly, although she has failed to win a race to date, gave promise of developing into a useful performer. Sho is a good pacer, and her spell may find her greatly improved in stamina. One of the best two-milers to race two or three seasons ago, Sir Guy s recent form has been much below his former standard, and it has been decided to retire him. ' Minneapolis, the sister to Indianapolis, who has been located at Addington under F. C. Dunlevey for a .few weeks, has not impressed that trainer, and sh« is to be returned to Durbar Lodge. She is a racy-looking filly, and she has a great turn of speed but m her wonc to date she has shown no stamina whatever, finding it hard to go beyond half a mile at a reasonable speed. No doubt she will be improved with more time,- but her inability to get a distance does not make her juvenile, prospects as bright as what her breeding would ; suggest. WRACKLER'S HALF-BROTHER.
In the circumstances it is unlikely that her engagement in the New Zealand Sapling Stakes, to be decided next month, will be continued, and it is possible that Durbar Lodge will depend on the Frank Worthy—Tm Pointer colt to represent the stable in that event. His breeding would suggest that he will be good, and with two outstanding juvenile performers in Wrackler and Arethusa from Tnx Pointer, the Frank Worthy colt has everything in his favour to make a first-class juvenile.
