OBITUARY
MR. C. HEADLAND
The death of Mr. Charles Headland, of Overtoun Terrace, Hataitai, a wellknown figure in the yachting world in Wellington, is announced.
Born in 1862, Mr. Headland, at the age of 15 years, was apprenticed to the sea in one of the New Zealand Shipping Company's ships. During his whole sea career he was with this company, and in 1882 was in the Waitara when she collided with the Hurunui in the English Channel, He became a master mariner at the age ol 28 years. Early in the present century he retired from the sea and ertered the Civil Service. He served in the Land and Income Tax Department, from which he retired- in 1920. Mr. Headland was a very keen yachtsman, and in 1907 he bought the yacht Viking from the Freyberg brothers. He was a prominent member of the now defunct Te Kuru Club, and what was formerly the Port Nicholson Club. In 1920 he was the chief mover in the formation of the Evans Bay Yacht and Motor-boat Club. Mr. Headland is survived by a widow and one daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Bell, of Hataitai, two sons, Messrs. Cyril Headland, of Hatailai, and Stanley Headland, of Auckland, and three grandchildren.
