SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE
BANK DEPOSITS
The revenue of the Post and Telegraph Department for- the year ended March 31 shows a substantial increase over the returns for the previous year. The details- were disclosed today by the Postmaster-General (the Hon., F. Jones), who said that the increased.revenue provided another indication of the Dominion's increased prosperity. ■ "The total of all classes of revenue I for 1937 was £3,884,000/ compared with £3,550,000 for 1936, an improve^ ment.of £334;000',". stated the Minister, As the'increase for 1936 over 1935 was £207,000,: the increase for the year just closed exceeds that increase by a considerable amount. "The. main increases in revenue are as follows:— ■": Total : Increases. BS.OOO 1,339,000 "In the month of March, the toll traffic, which reached 1,268.500 communications with a revenue of £55,000. is the highest on record, and the total niimber of telegrams, which .reached 467,000, is higher than in any.previous month, excepting the, months of December and in February, 1931 (Napier earthquake) in the,, past seven years. "The savings bank business- is another indication of the • trend of progress. The deposits for the year ended, March 31 last were £30,677,000, and the withdrawals £27.042,000, an excess of deposits of £3,635,000. The amount standing to the credit of savings bank depositors on March 31, 1936, was ,£52,916,000. With the excess of deposits and interest on March 31, 1937, amounting to £1,514,000, the amount at credit of depositors on March 31 last was £58,065,000, an' increase of £5,149,000."
