REAL COST OF BUILDING

; (To the Editor.) ;■-. Sir,—Your sub-leader ol April 30, the "Real Cost of Building," was certainly interesting, but in my opinion you have missed, the real cause of the slump in private building. Having acquired a section by deposit, _ I am unable to build a home as my financial interest in the section is insufficient! plus the two-thirds ■ (Government loan) of the amount required to meet the cost of a normal five-roomed dwelling. , The legislative legacy left by the Coalition Government in the shape of 2^ per cent, exchange and the 5 per cent, sales tax are two real, anchors to progress for the rank and file. There is;a considerable .quantity of British imports used in the building trade and the exchange plus:sales tax must make a difference of at least £100 on,an ordinary £800 house. I am now in the position of paying an unduly high rent for an-old house and also paying for the section,.';' which I cannot use. My sincere, belief ..is that'the Labour Government^will remove.at the safest time for all" concerned this' paralysing legislation left by their predecessors. —I am, etc.,. . .. . \:., ■ .: vinco.
