GAY BOY'S SURPRISE

DANNEVIRKE WIN

BIG TOTALISATOR INCREASE

(Special to the "Evenfno Post.")

WOODVILLE, May 1,

The Dannevirke. Racing ,Club's Annual Meeting at Woodville was concluded today, the going being soft, but the weather remained fine.except for a heavy shower half-way through the programme. The meeting was a highly successful one, the totalisator handSing £10,529, compared with £4905 on the second day last year, an increase of £5624. The total for the two days was £19,901, against £10,454 last year, when the meeting was held on a Wednesday- and Thursday. The gate receipts also showed a big increase, and the club should show a handsome profit.' COLLISION'S HURDLES. Ethiop was favourite for, the Hurdles, but after being prominent for a mile he1 dropped out and finished third. The winner was Collision, who beat Iddo home after the pair had been together at the last fence % They were well clear of the others "half a mile from home, and Collision's pace on the flat made all the difference. Kentucky Song jumped well and was not disgraced. . ' ■•'.". CAPTAIN FURST AGAIN, Captain Furst proved that his firstday ..win was no fluke by winning the Tiratu- Plate even more decisively. Notice was a good'second, "just ahead of Galteemore. Captain■'. Furst .had charge leading to the straight clear of Vienna, Galteemore, and Notice. The short-priced favourite never left the issue in doubt, winning very easily by three lengths from Notice, who beat Galteemore by half a length. Hunting Tartan, was fourth. . A REAL GOOD FINISH. There was a great finish in the Hartgill Handicap. Gay Boy just beat the outsider Waipiro, and a great go for third" saw the ■ fast-finishing Darecourt just get up to head M&ster Cyklon, with Charade almost in-line. Red Manfred was chopped out at the start. Master Cyklon, the early, leader, soon gave way to Pakanui, who was joined by King's Lancer going into the back. At the half-mile Pakanui and Rona Bay were setting the pace, followed by King's Lancer, Waipiro, Gay Boy, Master Cyklon," and Charade. There was • little alteration' into the straight, where Gay' Boy and Waipiro came through but the former held on to. win narrowly. . ■'~.. DORADO ALL OUT. "Blue Gfarter stood on the mark and took no part in the Tdtaranui Handicap, which was won by Dorado, who lasted just, long enough to beat the fast-finishing Chat. Royal Record was the early leader from : Diamond Cutter, Dorado, Tycoon, and • Chat. The order was much the same at the half-mile, and Royal Record and Dorado turned. . for home shead of! Diamond Cutter, Cloudy Bay, and Chat. Below the distance Dorado had charge, but had to be. ridden"' right "'-out"" to" 'withstand Chat's challenge, the margin being a short neck. Royal Record was third, a length and a half, away, and Cloudy Bay was close up fourth. FAVOURITE'S SPRINT. Black Thread, favourite for the open sprint, finished nicely.to beat Hunting Morn, who looked likely at the home turn.- From a good start. Hunter's Morn s:'. the pace to the straight, followed by Huntette. Bun Fight, and Black: Thread.. When heads - were turned for home Hunter's Morn-was well clear, but Black Thread wore him down and won. by half a length. Hunting Lodge was four lengths back third, and.Huntette was fourth. TARO WINS WELL. Taro, favourite for the.' Glengarry Handicap, was last early but moving forward from-there.he went past the others and won rather nicely from Jazz Boy and Marjory Daw. First Chapter and Hunting Star showed the way'to the straight, closely attended by Jazz Boy and Taro, and in a good finish Taro got up and beat Jazz Boy by over a length. Marjory Daw finished fast a neck; away. Sporting ■ Gift was fourth. NAUGHTY MARIETTA EASILY. The Hawera mare Naughty Marietta scored an easy win in the Kaitoke Hack. Handicap.
