BARLEY INDUSTRY

VOLUNTARY CO-OPERATION

The personnel of the committee to assist the Government in bringing about voluntary co-operation in the barley industry was announced last night by the Minister of Agriculture (the.Hon. W. L. Martin).

The Minister recalled that in November last he expressed the desire of rthe Government to give effect to proposals for the improvement of the barley industry, and then indicated that an. advisory committee would be set up to assist the Government in that direction. The personnel of this committee has now been decided as follows:—

Mr. K. B. Bennent, Department of Ag-

riculture,. chairman. ,■ . Growers' representatives: Mr- '&• 'T. McMillan, Leeston; Mr. H. H. Gifford, Blenheim. Maltsters' representatives: Mr. J. H, Hewlett, Christchurch; Mr. A. B. Duncan, Christchurch. Mr. J. M. Smith, Department of Agri-

culture, Dunedin. "I wish to make it perfectly clear that there is no intention on the part of the Government of 'controlling' the industry," said the Minister.' "The aim is, rather, that any improvements which may be effected will be brought about by voluntary co-operation within the industry itself. The representation on the advisory: committee of growers and maltsters shouldfacilitate the puttuig into operation of improved practices, and 1 confidently anticipate that the work of the-committee "will be of outstanding value to the industry." The first meeting of the committee will. be. held at an early date.
