SUCCESSFUL OPENING DANCE

. The Pharmacy Hall was a very bright and cheerful place last night, when the Athenian Club held the opening night of the season. The hall was gay with streamers in many tones across the ceiling and down the sides of the walls, held in groups here and there with square shields in gay colours with the letter A in large design. There were tables round the room, each with central vases of flowers, so artistically made by a member of the club that "they were pleasantly deceptive and very effective. There was an excellent orchestra, and the programme was an interestingly varied one, there being a novelty entitled "Nobody's Darlin'," and a medley which included an old-time waltz. Valeta, Destiny, and Maxina. Added to these were the Gay Gordons, Paul Jones, Military Two-steps, Lucky OneStep, and others, giving, plenty of variety for the dancers. Mr. A. Williams was M.C. for the evening.' Appreciated songs were sung by Mrs. Miller and Mr. A.. Haley.

The president (Mr. Loader) made a

brief speech, congratulating the members on the excellent start made for the year. He welcomed both new and old members and told them that there was every, likelihood- of the season being an outstandingly good one. The Athenians, he said, showed not only originality in their entertaining, but great harmony among themselves. He quoted a Maori motto expressing friendship and ■ confidence in the society and' themselves. , Mr. Loader then read a lengthy list of new members, each of whom was asked to stand as the:name was mentioned. ■ ■

Mention-was made.of the fact that to become a member of the Athenians the election has to be a-unanimous one, and also that much care is taken to keep "up the high reputation the club has attained in the good conduct of all their entertainments'. The season is well planned with a number of special events which should give pleasure to all. Mrs. Loader was presented with a charming bouquet of scarlet flowers by Mrs. Delmonte. She was wearing a frock of pale lemon satin with floral design and a short coat of silver tissue.
