TUNNEL ROAD PROPOSAL
"If the tunnel road means the remodelling and reconstruction of the port of Lyttelton, most members of the Lyttelton Harbour Board, as at present constituted, do, and will, oppose it on the ground that reconstructing the port and changing it from a railway-worked port, which combines road and rail access to the wharves, must inevitably increase the cost of primary products at f.p.b., and probably thecost to the primary producers of those things brought in over the wharves." This statement was made by the chairman of the Lyttelton Harbour Board (Mr. W. K. McAlpine) in an address to farmers and ratepayers of the Ashburton County on Tuesday (reports "The Press"). The meeting was called by the Mid-Canterbury Provincial Executive'of the New Zealand Farmers' Union to hear the reasons of Messrs. W. G. Gallagher and J. W. Bowden, Ashburton representatives on the Lyttelton Harbour Board, for their action in voting against the tunnel road proposal. Mr. McAlpine emphasised that he was present only as a primary producers' representative on the board. The meeting expressed approval of the action of the Ashburton representatives on the board in voting against the proposal.
