FISHERMAN MISSING
EVIDENCE OF TRAGEDY
(13y felegrapli-l'ress Association.)
WAIHI. April 27.
Last seen on Thursday engaged gathering cockles on the sand flats of the Bowentown estuary, opposite Matakana Island, no trace has been, found, of William Abner Shires, aged 50, of Tauranga, and it is feared he met his death by drowning. His dinghy was found at Matakana Island, and his thigh waders were discovered attached to a fork used for gathering cockles and which was driven into the sand. His launch was anchored in the main channel near the cockle beds.
Indications point to the supposition that Shires left his launch in ,the dinghy for the purpose of gathering cockles and pulled the boat up on the sands but had no anchor. After filling four bags with the shellfish he discovered that the dinghy had drifted away and in making an attempt to reach it, or the launch, lost his life.
Search for the body was instituted yesterday and was resumed this morning.
