OPENING OF SEASON

NORTH V. SOUTH MATCH

The local chess season was very successfully opened at the Gas Company Building, on Saturday evening, when the annual match between players from the northern half of Greater Wellington and those from the southern half was.held. Wright, M.P., presented the annual prizes—a task which he performed regularly while he was Mayor of the city. These were, as follows: — Teams tournament: First grade, Ngaio Chess Club; second grade, "Brooklyn Fire Brigade Chess Club;, third grade, Wellington Working Men's Club and Literary Institute; champion of champions; first grade, F. K. Kelling; second grade, C. L. Maloriey; third grade, R.jßrown. Mr. Wright expressed pleasureat ; seeing such a large attendance, and; congratulated the. league on the excellent-results of its efforts to develop the game in Wellington1. > In .thanking Mr. Wright for his attendance, Mr. J. I. Goldsmith (chairman)1 reminded the assembled players that Mr.Xajos Steirier, one of Europe's present-day^ grand masters; of chess, w.ouldibegin his .Wellington season next •Saturday. During Mr. Steiner's Wellington week three evenings are to be devoted to simultaneous displays and three'to-lectures.

The 1926 match was abandoned as it was desired not to affect the Wellington Club's jubilee celebrations. The dividing-line,between North and South is taken through Courtenay Place, Manners Street, "Upper Willis Street, and Aro Street, and this-'provided wellbalanced .teams. Hutt and. Petone are included' in the northern, half. As the provisional pairings had to be rearranged before play started, the committee wishes it to be understood that the score-sheet given below is not to. be regarded as showing the contestants in the order of their playing strength.
