WILLIE WIN EASILY

THE GREAT AUTUMN

RED SUN REPEATS EFFORT

(Special to the "Evening Post.") ... CHRISTCHURCH, March 30. | A day of mixed conditions greeted the conclusion of the Canterbury Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting. Heavy rain fell overnight, and there was a downpour about 8 o'clock this morning. Then the sun came out, followed later by more heavy showers. Soon after racing started the sky cleared, and for the remainder of the day there was brilliant.sunshine. The course was heavy to start with, but it improved. The investments were £26,240, as against £23,616 last year,, making a total for the meeting of £69,986, compared with £59,474, an increase of £10,512. RED SUN AGAIN. Hunting Bag, Golden Lap, and Look Smart:were the early leaders in. the Peerswick Brush Hurdles. Brigadore joined in after seven furlongs, and then -went on with Hunting Bag in front. Red Sun and Polydora were handy to the front lot at the six-furlong post, where Golden Lap retired. Brigadore and Red,- Sun led Polydora to the straight. Red- Sun was in charge at the last hurdle, and won easily. Monastic, after being last most of the way, finished strongly to beat Brigadore for second. Polydora,'. after looking dangerous, tired over the final furlong. Red Sun revelled in the heavy ground, which also suited Monastic. THE THREE PLACES. In the Autumn Nursery Handicap, H. and A. Cutts provided the three placed horses. It was their second experience of the- kind -in two-year-old races at Ricearton this season, as Nightdress, Haughty Winner, and Mulatto got all the money in the Lyttelton Handicap at the-February Meeting. Irish Fiddle was in charge early, with. Yale, .Top Row, Screamer, and Bonnie Agnes also prominent. When the course proper was reached ' Mulatto, Lazybones, and Great Bramble started to move up. The early leaders tired and Great Bramble stayed on best to win by a length from Lazybones, who beat Mulatto by half a length.. Two lengths back Irish Fiddle beat Screamer and Bonnie Agnes-narrowly. Great Bramble is the.first of the progeny of Magnus to race in New Zealand. Magnus, by The Tetrarch. had a brief career at Stonyhurst Stud, where he was injured recently .through being kicked and he had to be destroyed. ROYAL CHIEF'S DOUBLE. Night Dress set the pace in the Challenge Stakes, being four lengths in front of Royal Chief at the half-mile post, with Paper Slipper two. lengths further back. Royal, Chief, went after the leader in the straight, headed him nearly-a furlong from home, and was easing up in the-last bit to win by a length. Paper Slipper was four lengths "away.' It was. a smooth performance on the part of the winner, who was in no way prejudiced by the heavy track, and it completed the Champagne-Challenge > double. DICTATE EASILY. In the Yaldhurst Handicap, Sunbeam and Almira led Coming Star, Dictate, arid Lustra! to the. home .turn, where Almira retired. -Dictate, took charge when-the straight was reached, Glenavon being in close ..attendance at the distance, with Miracle moving up. Dictate went-'on,, to win ' easily from Miracle., with Lustra! finishing on -to beat/the tinng-^Glenavon.. for, third.: Sunbeam and' Coming Star were next Dictate' will-win- more -races, but Miracle may develop into the best horse in' the "'field- when he has had some racing. Lustral was unlucky, as after getting out well he ran into trouble, losing a lot of ground. GOOD-CLASS MARE. Heloise,- Orange- Bud, Robant, and Sky Pilot were the pacemakers in the Addington Handicap, Sovereign Lady and Recollection being others prominent after three furlongs, where Chidden was moving.up after a slow start. Heloise and Robant retired at the home turn and Orange Bud was in trouble when the straight was reached. Sovereign Lady ran -to the front at the distance and won as she liked, a very attractive performance. Myriam came with a late rush .to beat Rousseau'for- second. Chidden, Recollection, Superex, and. Jolly .Beggar were close up. The winner will go on to good -open form over a journey next season. : - • IMPRESSIVE EFFORT. Willie Win won the Great Autumn Handicap in impressive style. It was hisfourth success on end and he looks on the" way to good1 class' form over a distance. Queen of Song led out from Chief Ranger,- with Wild Chase, Ponty, Willie Win, and Concertpitch following them out of the straight. Willip Win took second place at the mile post and a little further on Rebel Lad made a forward move. Ponty was last till half a mile from home, where he started to moye up, and Chief Ranger dropped out at this stage. Queen of Song was beaten -when the straight, was reached. Willie Win and Wild Chase were then left in charge,: with not much between them/and Arctic King started a" good-run. Willie Win drew clear a. little further on and he won easily by over a length. Arctic King, finishing strongly, beat Wild Chase by a length, the: last-named tiring under his weight. Three lengths back came Concertpitch and Rebel Lad, with gaps to' Quee- of Song; Ponty, and Sunee. Chief Ranger was last. It was a good race, with no excuses for any of the beaten horses, QUICK RETURN TO FORM. Nolana failed- to jump off in the Gimcrack Handicap. La France was smartest out, Lady Kate, Violenta, and Epic being others prominent in the early stages. Grey' Honour moved, up after going three furlongs and headed La France a. furlong from the post, going on to win by ,a length. Night. Wings put in a strong run over thefinal furlong to beat; La France in the last stride.' Silver Slipper was two lengths aw.ay, with Epic, Gold Cross; and Violertta close up. Grey Honour has not had much racing since he resumed after a spell and he benefited by his effort on the previous day. Stratosphere showed up momentarily two furlongs from home. EMISSARY SURPRISES. A successful meeting was concluded with \ a great finish for the Templeton Handicap. Fiord was slow to jump . out. The colours of. Knockfins Emissary, Joyous, and Epris were prominent early, . Knockfin ' • having charge :when the course proper was reached, with Invoice, Cyrillian, Rebel Chief, and Fiord also handy. Less than a . furlong . from the post Joyous looked like taking the lead,, but she.failed to run on. A little further on Emissary asserted himself and he went on to win by a little more than half a length. Knockfin beat Cyrilliah by a head, and Metal Bird, coming with a late rush, was only another head -.away, just in front of Joyous and Epris, with Rebel Chief and Fiord close up. The success ■ of■ ■ Emissary was a surprise, as he has the reputation of being at his best only on a really hard track. RESULTS IN DETAIL.
