LONDON, March 24
The diplomatic correspondent of the "Manchester Guardian" declares that Count Grandi's refusal to discuss the withdrawal of volunteers from Spain has precipitated what is regarded as the biggest crisis the Non-Intervention Committee has yet faced. The Russian delegate (M. Maisky) warned Count Grandi that the Italian Government' must adopt a different attitude "if it does not wish to imperil the whole peace of Europe." ' " The "Daily Telegraph" says Count Grandi expressed his personal view when he said th.c Italians would riot j withdraw from Spain until the end of the war. British circles are hopeful that his obstructive attitude can be modified. According to "The Times," Count Grandi's statement was:' "Italy will not withdraw "any of her volunteers from Spain until' the war has been de-1 cided by the defeat of the ' Spanish | Reds."
As reported yesterday, the political correspondent of the "Manchester Guardian" stated that Count Grandi, Italian Ambassador to London, speaking at a meeting of the Non-interven-tion in Spain Committee, said that not a single Italian volunteer would leave Spain' until' the end of the civil war. The chairman, Lord Plymouth, seemed greatly surprised, and said that the announcement created a situation of extrerrie gravity and that he would refer the matter to his Government.
