HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

Mrs. Olphert was'hostess to some fifty members of the Garden Circle of the Hutt Valley Horticultural. Society when they visited her garden at "Harptree" in Waiwetu Eoad, Lower Hutt. The garden is one of the first established in the Hutt Valley, and contains beautiful specimens of both native and imported trees. Captain Olphert, as' president of the society, takes a keen interest. in horticulture, and the. flower • gardens' were very much admired, especially a vivid bed of canna lilies, and the. growth .in a fern-house which has been established only for a few months. As the weather was uncertain, tea was served indoors. Members present were Mesdames, A. R. Gower, H, B. Gordon, P., Huthnance, Jarman, Gordon Reid, Clark, Cairns, Freeman, McMillan, Stickells, Brinsden, R. D. Elliott, J. R. Boyd, A. Smith, Symdnds, Murtagh, Winter, Woods, Western, Mr. and' Mrs. W. H. Smith,"Mr. and Mrs. Natusch, '. Mr. and Mrs. Sowers, Mr. and-Mrs. W. Smith, the Misses Gray, Grant, Flux, Fraser,. Wilson, and Messrs. H. J. Poole, sen., and Wilson. Kitchen Tea. . Miss Jean Garner, whose marriage to Mr. G. Burton takes place shortly, was the guest of honour at a "kitchen tea" evening given for her by \ Mrs. Land and Miss G. Hall in the Birch Street Hall at Lower Hutt. Miss Garner wore a flared frock of floral matalasse, and thanked her hostesses and friends for their kindness in a pleasant . little speech made Rafter supper,^ when the gifts were opened. Mrs.' Land and' Miss Hall received the guests, Mrs. Land wearing flame matalasse and Miss Hall floral georgette. Dancing and games occupied the evening, Mrs. Hay and Miss Bolton- contributing songs. The guests included Mr. and Mrs. Garner, Mr. and Mrs. W. Burton, Mr. and Mrs. S. Bolton, Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Land, Mr. and Mrs. E. Lavell, Mr. and Mrs. D. Ferguson, Mr. and Mrs. F. Hey, Mr. and Mrs. A. Cooper, Mr. and Mrs. P. Peterson, Mrs. Reardon, Mrs. Moyes, Mrs. Rasmussen, Mrs. Cobb; Misses R. .and N. Burton, V. and B. Rasmussen, N. Moyes, T. Whitcher, M. Reid, M. Simpson, B. Mcllraith, J. Guthrie, E. Williams, A. White, M. Fulton, S. and J. August; and Messrs. Brooker, Garner, Pugh, .A. Hey, J. and H. Bolton, and E. Collett. Normandale School. The annual concert of the Normandale School, Lower Hutt, was well attended. Pupils of the school provided the entertainment, and performed ■ excellently in plays, action songs, and individual items. • A" speech was made by Shirley Smith, the senior pupil,' expressing the school's appreciation of the work of their.headmaster, Mr. Baskett,-and the support given by the school committee. Mr. Macauley, chairman of the committee, spoke of the high standard of the children's performance, and made a presentation to Mrs. Baskett f rom the dommittee. The presentation of prizes and community singing concluded proceedings. ,
