BLUFF OYSTERS
QUALITY CRITICISED
SOME SUPPLIES CONDEMNED
"There have only been two shipments of what I would call quality oysters from Bluff since the beginning of the season," a Wellington shopkeeper stated today,. and when his comment led tQ inquiries being made at a. distributing agency an official there said that oysters had been arriving in such poor condition that some had to be condemned. The shopkeeper stated that he 'had been in the trade for many years and could judge the condition of oysters as well as anyone in Wellington. He would not pass bad oysters on to the public, he said, and produced accounts to show, that, he had been credited with oysters returned to the distributors. .
He expressed the opinion that the oyster dredgers at Bluff were 'Storing their catches in the harbour so. that they could send supplies to the market when dredging could not be done because of rough seas. However, this claim was not supported by the distributing company, the member interviewed being definite .that. oysters were not stored at Bluff. The condition of the oysters, he said, was not good and some had to be. rejected. Where a fishmonger purchased, oysters and believed they were unfit for sale the Health Department would inspect them and issue a certificate. If the oysters were condemned they did not have to be paid for.
When he was asked why the oysters were not in good condition he said the weather was responsible. The'oysters did not carry well in hot, muggy weather, and many of them reached Wellington without any sign of life. Under cooler conditions they were very much alive and heavier, and no complaints were received. His company was hoping for cooler weather because they were liable to lose on oysters sold to country customers and sent on direct from the wharves. He was satisfied that the oysters were sent from Bluff, in good condition because the industry was under strict control and the sale of stale oysters would not be permitted.
