Special forecast for Wellington:—
Moderate to strong northwesterly winds, reaching gale force at times and backing: later to the west.
Weather changeable and squally, with rain at times.
The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today, is for moderate to strong northerly to north-westerly winds, which at times will reach gale force in the CookStrait area. Winds will later back to the west or south-west in many places. The weather in eastern districts will be mainly fair, but in districts with a westerly aspect and in the southern portion of the South Island it will be cloudy to overcast. Intermittent rain is probable, more especially from Taranaki southwards. Temperatures will be warm.
A depression is at present crossing the Dominion and is apparently being followed by a secondary or two from across the Tasman Sea. Consequently northerly winds have freshened about Cook Strait, although otherwise winds have been only light to moderate in force. The weather has been cloudy to overcast in eastern districts and in the Cook Strait area with much mist or fog, and in places there has been scattered light rain. Elsewhere it has been mainly fair to cloudy. During last night, however, ' rain , fell in western districts from Taranaki southward and in the far south, some rather heavy falls being recorded. Nelson, for instance, had 63 points, Westport 81, Greymouth 144, and Arthur's Pass 74. Auckland's weather has been fair to fine, with a moderate north-easterly breeze.
Wellington's weather yesterday was fair and mild, although for the most part. cloudy, only three hours of bright sunshine being recorded. The wind, a light north-westerly, freshened last night, and early this morning there was a fall of 15 points of rain. Christchurch has had dull and misty weather, drizzling rain falling at times yesterday morning and again last night. A fresh easterly wind was blowing there yesterday, but at 9 a.m. today the wind was a light south-westerly and the sky was clear. It was dull and foggy in Dunedm most of yesterday, a moderate northerly breeze prevailing. Similar conditions were in evidence this morning, except that it was calm.
