STUD CHEVIOT SHEEP

SHIPMENT FROM CANADA

Stud sheep breeders and farmers generally throughout the Dominion will be interested in the arrival of a number of stud Cheviot sheep in Wellington by the Hauraki from Canada. Imported to the order of Mr. Joseph Webb, of Taihape, the sheep were selected and shipped by the stud stock department of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., acting through their Canadian agents, Messrs. W. Clark, Ltd.

During recent years the Cheviots have become increasingly popular in New Zealand,- and there is a keen demand for any surplus sheep. The only registered Cheviot stud in the Dominion is owned by Mr. Webb, and, as a result of-a successful importation last year, he wishes to increase his flock. A hardy, dual-purpose type, the Cheviot is eminently suited to the higher class of country- Being of good constitution, they are thrifty feeders, and carry good fleeces of medium wool. When crossed with the Romney they produce an ■ excellent maturing lamb of good weight, the ewe progeny having a definite value as a flock sheep. The Hauraki's shipment, comprising one stud ram lamb and five stud ewe lambs, was selected from four different flocks, the.ram and two of the ewes coming from Quebec and the balance from Ontario.
