A FURTHER ADVANCE
THREAT TO MADRID
A GRAVE SITUATION
(Received March 11, 1 p.m.)
LONDON, March 10,
It is reported from Salamanca that the insurgents marching against Guadalajara have advanced a further ten miles on a two-mile front and occupied the Valdiarenas Heights 16 miles from their objective.
A Madrid message states that the
Government has ordered the immediate mobilisation of all able men between the ages of 21 and 25 in view of the gravity of the situation, thus strengthening the forces by 100,000.
The pressure of the Italian columns on the Guadalajara front is terrific. Bombers are incessantly active.
A message from Madrid states that the gravity of the situation in the capital'led the Leftists to hold a national council resulting in a renewal of the party's unconditional adhesion to the Loyalist Government. It was decided to place at the Government's disposal all military units organised by the party, aggregating 30,000. General Miaja reiterates confidence in his ability to withstand the enemy despite their delivery of five successive major attacks; ■ - Prisoners captured on the Guadalajara front report that two fullyequipped Italian divisions, under an Italian, General Pozzi, are leading the insurgent . offensive in this sector, which apparently is designed to close the remaining outlets from the capital. An Avila message states that -the insurgents are now advancing along the Guadalajara Road which is a vital element in Madrid's communication with Valencia, since the insurgents already have cut the direct road to Valencia. A continuance of the insurgent advance, therefore, spells the death of Madrid.
