BUY BRITISH

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—While supporting J'Buy British" in his remarks concerning the deluge of foreign imports coming into our country, I do not agree that the Government can be blamed entirely. Foreign goods were being imported and sold in New Zealand long before the present Labour Government came into office, in fact, if so much might be said, we probably would not have had to take up arms in defence of the Empire in 1914 had it not been that the imports to Great Britain and her Dominions from Germany for years prior to 1914 so strengthened her that, she endeavoured to conquer the world. In fact, as one who did his bit at Passchendaele I have recollections, of disgust among the boys that our money was being thrown back at us in the shape of red-hot bullets and gas, and pledging ourselves that if we got out of.it-never to buy a thing that was not made in England, and I can swear to having kept my pledge. We are, however, living among a new generation without the experience of those years of slaughter and misery with the world watching every nation1 arming to the teetfr preparing for war which may come sooner or later, when the sons of those of 1914 may find themselves imbued with similar thoughts of disgust and fight the fight all over again. In the meantime we have the opportunity of helping Britain to make the fight an even one, by

BUYING BRITISH.
