DISMAL WEATHER

COLD AND SHOWERY

Special forecast for Wellington:—

Moderate to strong southerly winds, reaching gale force at times. Weather cold and unsettled, with further rain probable.

The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today, is for south-westerly to southerly winds. These will be moderate to strong generally, and will rise to gale force at times in exposed positions. The weather will still be unsettled, with showers at times in most districts and with more general rain in the central provinces. Hail, too, is probable in places, and temperatures will be cold.

While an intense anti-cyclone centred hear Tasmania remains practically stationary, there appears to be no end to the present series of depressions which continue to cross the Dominion and to affect the. weather adversely. Cold and changeable conditions have prevailed, with occasional showers in most districts. Some rather heavy rain occurred last night in the-far south, in the Cook Strait area, and also on parts of the West Coast of the South Island, and hail also has been reported in places. Yesterday's winds were light to moderate and rather variable about Cook Strait, but otherwise southwesterlies to southerlies predominated. These were moderate to strong generally, and since last night gale force has been reached again in places on the East Coast of the South Island. Auckland's weather yesterday was fair with a south-westerly breeze, but it was showery there both last night and this morning. Wellington's weather yesterday was dull. The morning was calm, while a light northerly breeze blew in the afternoon. This changed to the south about 6 p.m., subsequently dying down to a' calm. Early this morning, however, a fresh southerly sprang up again. Light rain fell last night, the fall after 4.30 a.m. being steady. Up to 9 a.m. today 48 points had been recorded at Kelburn. * Christchurch had cold and overcast weather with a south-westerly breeze. Last night was showery, and since early this morning rain or hall has been accompanying a light south-westerly wind. Dunedin has continued to have cold and wintry conditions. A strong southwesterly wind has risen to gale force at times, and has been accompanied by heavy showers. The rainfall has totalled 69 points.
