CONGREGATIONAL UNION

Delegates to the fifty-fourth annual assembly of the Congregational Union of New Zealand are to be welcomed today at a tea given by the Wellington district committee. Welcomes will also be extended by the Mayor (Mr. T.. C. A. Hislop)-, the Bishop of Wellington, the Rev. D. J. Boulton Smith (Wellington Ministers' Association) t and Mr. T. C. Brash, Moderator of the Wellington Presbytery. At the first public meeting this evening the Rev. H. W. Newell will be inducted to the chair by the retiring chairman, Mr. :H: Sturge, of Christchurch, and later will .give his presidential address, his subject being "The Organised Church in Modern Society."

The conference will last until Thursday, March 18. Council business will occupy the attention of delegates during the mornings, and one matter that will come up for discussion will arise out of the following notice of motion, given by Canterbury: "That the Canterbury district committee, being of opinion that the question of union with the Presbyterian or Methodist Church is of paramount importance, asks that a full discussion be allowed at the 1937 assembly, with a view to defining the position of this denomination ■on this vi)al matter in the interests of the Kingdom of God." ■ .

Public meetings will be held each evening, and those contributing addresses on these occasions will include the Rev. A/ Murray, the Rev. A. C. Nelson, i-the Rev. D. Gardner 'Miller, and the "Rev. F.de. Lisle.'
