The third annual tournament under the auspices of the Wanganui Croquet Association, was concluded last week. Although the hospitality of the Wanganui players was all that could be desired, the weather could not have been worse. On most. mornings the greens were not in a fit' condition for play until 10 a.m. and on several'occasions play was stopped by heavy rain. It was agreed that .never in the history of croquet in Wanganui have the lawns been so, sodden with worm-casts. Under such distressing conditions the croquet was not good. Mrs. Crawford as manager, did her utmost to cope with the situation, and with 260 entries, the tournament concluded in eleven days. .There were 18 entries in the open event, which was played on the Yankee system,'necessitating 75 games in all,'the winners of each section playing off. Players from Raetihi, Waipukurau, Lower Hutt, Wellington, Patea, Palmerston North, Masterton, and Taihape took part in a- varied and interesting programme which has proved itself second to none in the Dominion. As the open championship is played in the same way as the gold and ' silver medals contests, entries should be more numerous each year; Several' new and beautiful cups were presented- to the association for the events, Mrs. Walker having donated one for the open event, Mr. A. J. Gibbs one for the men's, and Mr. F. L. Harrison one for the ladies'. I

The following is the list of winners:—Open Championship, A. E. Ogier; runner-up, Mrs. Jarvie. Ladies' Championship, Mrs. W. E. Caldow; runner-up, Mrs. Amies. Men's Championship, A. J. Gibbs; runner-up, D. McClymont. Championship Doubles, Mesdames Gambrill and Bassett; run-ners-up, Mesdames Caldow and D. McClymont. Handicap Doubles, Mesdames Lowery and Redpath; runnersup, Mr. and Mrs. La Roche. Level Singles A, J. H. Hindman (Waipukurau); runner-up, Mrs. McClymont. Level Singles B, Mrs. Wallace (Wanganui); runner-up, Mrs. Sandford (Raetihi). Handicap Singles A, A. E. Ogier; runner-up, D. McClymont. Handicap Singles B, Mrs. La Roche; run-ner-up, Miss Main.

■In the finals,of the handicap doubles, a thrilling-game was witnessed be-

tween Mesdames Lowery and Redpath and Mr. and Mrs. La Roche. The latter pair had to concede 2 bisques. At the commencement of the game Mrs. La Roche made a break of seven, but let in her opponent, and Mrs. Lowery in two turns finished to four back. Mr. La Roche then got the play and made a break of six, finishing in the next turn. Mrs. Lowery hit in, going ■to rover, and Mrs. La Roche again got the play and also carried her clip to rover. At this stage- Mrs. Lowery, using the bisques to assist her partner, gradually worked the second clip round, and La Roche, securing the command made rover and played for his partner. Mrs. Lowery, who was playing well, hit the long shot and pegged out La Roche's ball. At this stage the game was most exciting as Mrs. La Roche failed at rover, letting in Mrs. Redpath who also failed. Eventually Mrs. Redpath made the point and finished 26/24. •

The finals of the ladies' championship went to three games, and was played between Mrs. Caldow (Wellington) and Mrs. Amies (Wanganui). In the first game Mrs. Caldow, in attempting a long peg out, failed with the forward ball, putting the: other ball out accidentally. At this stage Mrs. Amies had her. clips on four back and penultimate, . and with careful play succeeded in making the remaining points before her opponent could secure the shot. In the last two games of the rubber Mrs. Amies was not playing up to her usual form, and'both players did not make the most of opportunities afforded, 'although Mrs. Caldow eventually settled down to the keener lawns and won both games with the same score, 26-6. BOUNDARY BALL. In recent tournaments the question has been raised, as to when, a ball is boundary in the case of the cord marking. This method-of outlining the lawn serves the same purpose as the chalk line, and according to the rule if the ball, at the conclusion, of or during the stroke, touches a. perpendicular to, overhangs the boundary, or touches a corner peg, it is said to be off the court. In several* instances the ball has actually touched the cord and rebounded—this of course is ruled as a ball off the court. i : : ;:;:;:, ; :PERSpNAL'S.;' ■>■ ' '.
