TRENTHAM RACES

THE AUTUMN MEETING

WET WEATHER. FOR OPENING

TRACK VERY HEAVY

(By "Ribbonwood.")

The wet day that has been threatening since the beginning of the weekcame today for. the opening of the Wellington Racing Club's Autumn Meeting at Trentham. Each day earlier, this week gave some promise . that nothing serious would come out of the threat, but rain > set in in earnest last evening. ' Many would not ■ have been surprised this morning to learn that there was to be no racing, • but, in accordance with its policy of no postponement except in extreme ; circumstances, tne club decided at an early meeting of stewards to go on with the schedule. There was never much likelihood during the forenoon tiiat the weather would break, but the rain was much lighter and for periods ceased to fall. The wind was in the south and the temperature was low. In all respects it was to be Trentham near its worst instead of at its best. The rain completely spoiled all prospects of a good track. The turf was already-soft,; and it became, sodden and greasy with the rain, cutting up as soon as hoofs touched it. ■. The attendance was naturally greatly affected by the conditions, only the keenest of sportsmen and sportswomen braving the weather, but under all 1 (he circumstances it was satisfactoryIt is to be hoped'that "Trentham luck" returns before the concluding day on Saturday to offset the unfortunate com- • mencement to the meeting. Results and running descriptions up to the time of going to Press were:— RIMTJ- HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP, £300; second horse £70 and third £35 from the stake; 1J miles. S—7—F. Anderson), fi-8 Brigadore 9.2 (W. J. McDowell), 6-5 Lady Wessex 9.0 (C. McGovern). The record of long-priced horses in the opening event at Trentham has ; been a consistently good one, and.Laggard kept it up in the . Rimu High- , weight Handicap. He was always one of the leading, division, and when the straight was. reached he came away from Beau Gallante, Wananga, Spender, and Revival to .win by a head from Red Sun. This topweight was last nearly all the way to the straight, and he finished much faster than anything else. Spender was two lengths away, /third, then Revival, Beau Gallante, Wananga, and Brigadore. Beau Gal- • lante took charge before the mile and looked to be doing it well within but he collapsed at the distancei ■■••_■ Time, 2min 17sec. (Winner trained by D. MeCauley, . Trentham.) Nelumbo took charge-before- the halfmile, at which stage he was- followed by Myriam, Peacock, Sunbeam, Good .Sun, and Southern Blood. The order .was much the same at the straight entrance. Nelumbo retired inside the distance, and Myriam came away to beat. Sunbeam by three lengths, • with Southern Blood a length away and iNelumbo'fourth. Good Sun and Peatcock were next. Wild Chase won ■under a firm hold by seven lengths, and Cerne Abbas, who drifted from the-start, was twelve lengths away. Martara ran the first half mile in 51J sec, but the pace in the middle stages .was not so good. As a comparison it may be mentioned that the Highweight horses earlier in the day ran the last half mile in 53£ sec, and in the St. Leger the last half mile required 58sec. . Time: 3min 9i}sec. (Winner trained by H. and A. Cutts, (Riccarton.) PACIFIC HANDICAP, £500; second horse £100 and 'third £50 from the stake; for two-year-olds; 6." furlongs, j 2—2—Russell Grace's b. g Smoke . Goulsbro'), 11-11 Mother-in-Law 7.7 (J. McCauley). Smoke Screen, although running very greenly, staged a great finish in the last half-furlong of the Pacific Han.dicap ..after appearing to have little chance when the field straightened up for home. When they reached, the course proper, Relative and Screamer were- in charge from Haughty Winner, Top Row, and Only One. Smoke Screen then moved up slightly, but he hung fire and was inclined to run. about. 8., H. Morris had to exercise every care in his final effort, which carried Smoke Screen to a well-merited victory by' a head over Only One, who also put up a capital performance.

Haughty Winner, under his big weight, was not disgraced in finishing a length away third. The Crooner was a good fourth, then Accomplice, Screamer, and Royal Chief. Time, lmin 16sec. ■
